Craig Melvin has returned to the Today Show after a long absence
He may be a top TV anchor, but Craig Melvin proved he is just like us mere mortals when it comes to parenting as he returned to the show after his absence for spring break.

 

The Today Show host was forced to apologize for an on-air blunder after he got his son’s age wrong – live on the show. Craig welcomed his mini-me Delano on set for National Bring Your Kid To Work Day on April 24 and accidentally got his age wrong.

 

Craig, who replaced Hoda Kotb on the Today show earlier this year, said, “It’s hard to get a 10-year-old up at 3.45. My daughter slept in.” The doting dad later owned up to his mistake, and rather gallantly he later brought the youngster to the plaza and set the record straight with a full apology which made him totally relatable to many parents watching.

 

Craig proudly said, “This is Delano Melvin. He had a birthday a few weeks ago. So earlier, I referred to him as a 10-year-old. My son is…” He then handed Delano the mic to complete the sentence. Delano, clearly up to the presenting challenge beamed, “11.”

Craig said, “A formal apology. I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” His co-host Carson Daly then jumped in to playfully tease Craig about the mistake. Thankfully, Willie Geist chimed in that he totally understood what Craig had been through.

Offering his support, he said, “We’ve all done it, Craig. We’ve all done it.” Craig Melvin was back this week after taking an an extended break from the Today Show and a beloved NBC sportscaster stepping in to replace him.

The 45-year-old TV host chose to put family first and spent spring break with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and their two children, 11-year-old Delano and eight-year-old Sybil. Mike Tirico, 58, stepped into his co-hosting spot. It came after Savannah Guthrie, 53, made the shake-up announcement during an episode of the show on Thursday, April 10.

 

 

Meanwhile it is no secret how much Craig and his wife dote on their children. They were bursting with pride as they celebrated a recent milestone for Delano earlier this year.

Lindsay Czarniak was so proud about their son’s sporting achievements, she shared the news with fans. The mom-of-two explained that Craig, who replaced Hoda Kotb on the Today show earlier this year, coaches Delano’s basketball team and their final game of the season was huge.

She wrote on Instagram, “They were playing the best team in the league which was also undefeated. I felt goosebumps like when I covered George Mason make it to the Final Four watching them pull off the upset. I may have shed a tear.”

 

Lindsay, who is also mom to their daughter Sybil said, “The other team is full of great kids and masterfully coached but Melvin instilled a belief in his group that they could do it AND THEY DID. The gym erupted bc of the underdog storyline and I could barely hold my phone still.”

The doting mom was bursting with pride for the other team too. Lindsay said, “What a thrill and a blessing to see these kids accomplish a goal that seemed so out of reach. It may have been rec basketball but they will remember this forever.”
