Emotions Ran HIGH On Set As TODAY Team Delivered POWERFUL Message To Sheinelle Following HEARTBREAKING Loss That Left Everyone In TEARS

The TODAY family is rallying around Sheinelle Jones.

The show announced on May 23 that Sheinelle’s husband, Uche Ojeh, has died of brain cancer, prompting an outpouring of sympathy and support for her, while also sharing their own love for Uche.

Sheinelle and Uche married in 2007. They are parents to son Kayin, 15, and twins Clara and Uche, 12.

“There are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children,” Savannah Guthrie said on TODAY. “Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him.”

Savannah said everyone on TODAY is thinking about Sheinelle and her family.

“We are with you. We love you. You are our family. We are just sending all of our love to you right now,” she said.

Craig Melvin was a good friend of Uche’s and he recalled playing golf with him last fall, during which time they talked about life. Craig also said his love for his children knew no bounds.

“One thing he always talked about, he talked about those kids,” Craig said. “He loved those kids more than anything else in this world, and was just so proud. He was that dad that was on the sideline at every soccer game. He was at all of the concerts, and the recitals. He was that guy.”

Al Roker remembered Uche for his wit.

“He was a private guy, but he was wickedly funny,” he said. “He would say things that kind of caught you off-guard, but wasn’t braggadocious or anything. He was a very humble man.”

Dylan Dreyer marveled at Sheinelle’s strength during this ordeal.

“We all know Sheinelle. She’s always smiling,” she said. “She’s just a bright light whenever she walks into the room, even through this, you know? She relied on her faith. She relied on her friends.”

Jenna Bush Hager cited Sheinelle’s ability to rise above the situation, noting her sense of humor.

“There’s nobody funnier than Sheinelley,” she said. “And that humor, she’s found the grace in the grief, which is not easy. But I know we’ve all, when we’ve spoken to her, just been completely inspired.”

Craig also said it has been “remarkable” to see how Sheinelle has handled caring for Uche while still being a mother, and how she “still found a way to laugh about something.”

Savannah said Uche’s friends have come together for Sheinelle and her family, while she and Uche coped with all that came their way.

“Sheinelle is a warrior, and Uche was a warrior, and they have been incredible. She has risen to the occasion, and then some,” she said.

Carson, who was 5 when his father died, shared how faith played a role in his own experience with grief.

“I think back now, 45 years later, my faith in God. God has blessed me in my life,” he said. “Here it is. So here I am, the young kid, and I say, eventually God gave me two incredible fathers, incredible figures in my life. And my life has been so fulfilling, and I’m so blessed for that. So I pray for their family and the kids that they’ll have that fortunate as well.”

Savannah also credited Uche for his strength.

“Uche had a beautiful, deep, abiding faith, every single day of this fight and you could see it in his eyes,” she said. “He was an extraordinary person. We love him and we love you, Sheinelle.”

“We’re with you. We love you,” Craig added.

Sheinelle was grateful for the kind words her co-workers showed.

“Thank you, for all of your love and support,” she wrote on Instagram on May 23 while sharing the segment.

The warm wishes continued during the 3rd hour of TODAY, with Al reflecting on how Uche and Sheinelle developed an even more intense bond during his battle with brain cancer.

“What’s been just so heartbreaking, but also life-affirming, is watching how the two of them I think got even closer during this time and the support, they both leaned on each other watching all of this,” he said.

Dylan said Sheinelle has remained a rock for her own family.

“Sometimes, it’s just so hard to find the words, right? We’ve talked to her so much in recent days. What do you say to someone who’s going through this?” she said

“And you talk to her, and she’s still that ray of light that she always is. She has been by his side through all of this. She’s still been there for her kids, through all of this to help them through this difficult time,” Dylan continued. “We talk about the family that we are here, and it breaks. Your heart breaks like it’s someone in your own family because it is.”

Sheinelle wrote on Instagram in January that she would be stepping aside from the show for awhile “to deal with a family health matter,” although she didn’t provide any further details.

Sheinelle has been with NBC News since 2014 and serves as a co-host on the 3rd hour of TODAY.
