DIY SOS host Nick Knowles broke down in tears during a heartbreaking episode of the beloved BBC renovation programme while he tried to give a speech about creating a youth club in Yorkshire. During the episode, which aired on BBC One at 8 pm tonight (Tuesday, December 30), Nick was left visibly emotional as a woman explained how important the original youth club was to her when she was younger, before it was converted into a food pantry. “I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t come to the youth club; it opened so many opportunities for me,” she shared while sobbing.
When it came to Nick’s turn to speak in front of the team, he choked back tears and said: “I grew up in a place like this, the kind of place that people say, ‘Oh, don’t bother building anything nice there, it will just get destroyed.’

“You have to build stuff in tough places, you have to make a difference to change…” He coughed as his voice started to crack, and he broke down in tears, leaving the team equally emotional.
He was applauded and encouraged as he needed a moment to compose himself. Nick managed to clear his throat and tell the team: “You will make this happen, you will change the futures of young people around here with what we are about to do. Are we up for it?”
Nick and the team, comprising the BBC’s Gladiators, quickly got to work on building a state-of-the-art youth club.
Members of the community emphasised the importance of a youth centre, as it could provide a safe space for youngsters who felt they had nowhere to go.
BBC viewers were equally moved by the instalment and shared their thoughts on X. One person penned: “#diysos I’m chopping onions #cherrytree.”
“I absolutely love what they’re doing on this programme #DIYSOS,” a second added. Watching the project being completed, another said: “#diysos doing what @GOVUK should be doing. Restoring youth centres for our young people.”
The episode of DIY SOS can be watched on BBC iPlayer.
