Strictly Come Dancing star Dr Punam Krishnan has revealed she has been battling breast cancer as she shared the “difficult” diagnosis on Instagram. The doctor and TV star said she was given the devastating news five months ago and has mentally been “to some very dark places” since.

Dr Krishnan took part in the star-studded BBC series in 2024 and explained that, despite being in “fear” since receiving the diagnosis, she is taking things one day at a time. Alongside a selfie from the hospital bed, the star took to the caption with the heartbreaking health update and penned: “Here goes … Five months ago, I heard the words nobody ever wants to hear: You have cancer.

“I still find it hard to write that sentence. But it’s my reality and my truth.”

Dr Krishnan added: “I’ve spent almost two decades as a doctor, supporting patients and families through difficult diagnoses. And yet, nothing – absolutely nothing – prepares you for being on the receiving end yourself. The shock. The fear. The trauma. In that moment, knowledge means very little.”

The BBC star continued: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Since then, I’ve taken things one day at a time because that’s all I could do. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be cared for by the most extraordinary NHS team, from my GP through to my breast and oncology teams. And still … it’s been really hard. Much harder than I ever imagined.

“I’ve kept this private while going through treatment, trying to protect my energy and most of all – my children.”

“My husband, my family and a small circle of friends have carried me through in ways I’ll never forget. When something like this happens, you realise very quickly what – and who – truly matters,” she concluded.

Dr Krishnan was inundated with support from fans and her celebrity pals, as one commented: “I’m so sorry you have had so much to deal with, and your lovely family too.

“One day at a time is all we have to focus on. Heal slowly and completely, and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sending you so much support and love.”

Another penned: “I’m so, so sorry you’re going through this. How utterly terrifying. I’m so glad you’ve had love and support.”

A third commented: “What a brave thing to share, glad you are on the path to recovery, take time to self-care.”

Strictly pro and breast cancer survivor Amy Dowden added: “You got this, pink sister. Sending so much love.”

Strictly’s It Takes Two host Fleur East said: “Thank you so much for sharing and raising awareness about early detection. Sending you lots of love.”

As Dr Krishnan’s Strictly partner, Gorka Marquez, added: “I know you, and I know you will get through this. And we will be sat having a coffee and a croissant.”
