Billie Piper is set to take over the iconic role of the Doctor in Doctor Who, regenerating from Ncuti Gatwa’s character during the series’ dramatic finale. Best known for her role as Rose Tyler, the Doctor’s trusty companion from 2005-2006, Piper has made a name for herself in the Doctor Who universe.

Since leaving the main series, Billie graced fans with cameos in 2008 and 2010 and notably returned for the show’s 50th anniversary special as a different character whilst still being recognized as Rose Tyler. Her stepping into the Doctor’s shoes has sparked excitement just days after rumors swirled about Ncuti Gatwa’s potential departure.

Commenting on her groundbreaking return, Billie expressed: “It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse.”

Ncuti Gatwa conveyed his feelings through a heartfelt BBC statement: “You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it.”

He continued: “This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe.”, reports the Mirror.

“The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show, and I can’t thank the Whoniverse and the Whovians enough for welcoming me in and making this such a touching experience.

“I’ve loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I’ll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.”

Meanwhile, showrunner Russell T Davies remarked: “What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti’s great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights.”

Social media was alight with reactions from fans after the finale. One fan exclaimed: “OMFG just watched the final episode of Doctor Who. Spoiler alert. Billie Piper as the Doctor. WTF.”

Another said, “Billie Piper as the 16th Doctor wasn’t what I expected, but hey, it is something!” Elsewhere, someone tweeted, “Billie Piper in Doctor Who. In the year 2025. Not on my bingo cards.”

Ncuti Gatwa ascended to the role of the iconic Doctor in May 2022, quickly cementing himself as a favorite among the global fanbase. He made his debut during the momentous 60th anniversary special broadcast in November of the subsequent year.

In a thrilling conclusion to season two of The Reality War, fans witnessed Ncuti’s character’s final moments. The climactic scenes featured the Doctor in a high-stakes showdown with the Rani, culminating in Ncuti’s character making a heart-wrenching sacrifice to save a young girl.

This update follows recent revelations that the scripts for the next two seasons of the show have already been penned. Speculation had been rife that the series might face cancellation if Disney chose to terminate its co-production agreement due to declining viewership and criticism over “woke” narratives.

However, insiders from the sci-fi series, which rakes in approximately $130 million for BBC Studios via international licensing deals and merchandise sales, assert that showrunner Russell T Davies has already charted the course for the upcoming two seasons, with scripts for the 16th series nearly finished and plotlines for the 17th series mapped out.

It was also suggested that if Disney were to pull out, the impact might not be as significant as some fans fear. This is because a substantial portion of the additional budget—up to £10 million per episode—is allocated to enhancing the picture quality to a standard that wouldn’t be required if it returned to being a solely BBC series.

The BBC airs its high-definition shows in 2K picture quality, but Disney requires a 4K image for its streaming platform, and the extra effects work comes with a hefty price tag. One insider argued that the show’s massive and devoted global fanbase, which has been tuning in since its debut in 1963, isn’t tied to Disney’s financial backing.

“When Doctor Who teamed up with Disney+, additional funding was secured. Doctor Who is a pricey production, with a large chunk of the total budget allocated to effects, so if Disney were to pull its funding, the impact on production wouldn’t be as drastic as some fans might fear. The TARDIS set is still intact in Cardiff, all set for more thrilling escapades.”
