Good Morning Britain star Ranvir Singh made a heartbreaking announcement on Wednesday

A Good Morning Britain star has announced devastating news after a “serious incident”. Wednesday’s (January 7) edition of the hit ITV programme was hosted by Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, who updated viewers on the latest news from across the UK and around the world.

They were joined in the studio by Laura Tobin, who delivered regular weather updates, while Ranvir Singh handled the rest of the day’s news.

The family of Trevor Wynn were wrongly told that he had died

Later in the show, Ranvir announced devastating news after a family were told that their son had died when he had actually been sedated in hospital for nearly three weeks.

“South Yorkshire police have apologised after officers wrongly told a family that their son had died in a car crash when he had, in fact, survived and had been alive and sedated in hospital for nearly three weeks,” the star announced.

South Yorkshire Police informed the family of Trevor Wynn, 17, that he had passed away, along with a girl of the same age, following a car crash in Rotherham last month. At the time, it had been thought that Joshua Jackson, 18, was under sedation in the hospital after being injured.

The police then said that new “information came to light” on Sunday (January 4), which had prompted further identification processes being undertaken.

Tests later confirmed that Trevor was the badly injured young man in the hospital receiving treatment, while Joshua was the person who had died.

Speaking to correspondent Amelia Beckett, who was reporting live outside South Yorkshire Police Headquarters, Ranvir added: “It sort of defies belief really that the identification process in such a serious incident could have gone so catastrophically wrong.”

Amelia replied: “It really does, Ranvir. I think many people will struggle to believe that this is a real story.

“This is a picture of 17-year-old Trevor Wynn, who spent three weeks sedated in hospital while his family believed that he was [dead]. Meanwhile, police wrongly identified him as 18-year-old Joshua Johnson, who was in the car crash alongside him.

South Yorkshire Police have apologised

“They told Joshua’s family that Joshua was alive when he had, in fact, tragically passed away. All of this only came to light, it’s reported, when Trevor woke up in hospital on Sunday and told staff who he was.

“Not only that, but it’s also reported that Trevor’s funeral was planned for later this week. We haven’t yet been able to verify that, but the Assistant Chief Constable here has, of course, apologised for this.”

In a statement, Colin McFarlane added: “I have also offered to meet with both sets of parents as I am sure they will have many questions, most of which we are not able to answer yet, but we are absolutely committed to understanding how this happened so it cannot happen again.”

Amelia concluded: “The force has also referred itself to the Police Watchdog to find out exactly what went wrong here.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am
