It was a heartbreaking moment that no son should ever have to face.
Charlie Quirke, the only son of beloved Birds Of A Feather actress Pauline Quirke, has broken his silence following the public revelation of his mother’s dementia — and what he said left fans in tears.
On Thursday, the 30-year-old actor took to Instagram to share a touching photo with his mother, thanking fans for their kindness and revealing the painful reality behind closed doors.
“Hi all, I just wanted to say a massive thank you to all of you for your messages of support, kind words about my beautiful mum, and the stories you’ve shared,” he wrote.
“We, as a family, are very moved and touched by all of them — they’ve put a smile on our faces during such a difficult time. We appreciate every single one of you. Thank you.”
But behind that gratitude lay something far more devastating. A close source said Charlie has confided that Pauline’s dementia has now worsened, and in moments of confusion, “she no longer recognizes me or Dad… she thinks I’m a stranger who’s entered her home.”
Fans were left heartbroken as the young actor’s quiet honesty offered a glimpse into the emotional toll the illness has taken on the family.
💫 A Mother Remembered for Her Heart and Humor
Pauline’s husband, Steve Sheen, confirmed earlier this week that the 65-year-old actress has been diagnosed with dementia since 2021 and will now step away from all professional and commercial duties.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back,” Steve said in a public statement.
“Pauline has been an inspiration through her acting, her charitable work, and as the founder of the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts. Her talent, dedication, and vision have touched countless lives.”
Pauline’s final public appearance was a moment of pride — receiving her MBE at Windsor Castle in February 2023, an honor bestowed by Prince William for her services to young people, entertainment, and charity.
At the time, Charlie had posted an emotional tribute to his mother:
“To my beautiful mum… I can’t start to tell you how proud I am. You are the most selfless, funniest, and most caring person I know. Here’s to you, Mum.”
🎭 A Legacy Etched in Television History
Best known for her iconic role as Sharon Theodopolopodous in ITV’s Birds Of A Feather — alongside Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph — Pauline Quirke became a household name for nearly 30 years.
Her versatility as an actress was unmatched, earning her a BAFTA nomination for The Sculptress, and critical acclaim for her dramatic turn as Susan Wright in Broadchurch.
Throughout her 50-year career, Pauline appeared in more than 60 television and film productions, including Emmerdale, Casualty, Carrie’s War, Cold Blood, You, Me and the Apocalypse, and North and South.
Her contribution to entertainment and charity was recognized when she was awarded an MBE in 2022, one of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s final honors list.
💔 Family Standing Strong in the Storm
Pauline and Steve married in 1996 and share their son Charlie, while the actress also has a daughter, Emily, 40, from a previous relationship.
The couple has requested privacy as Pauline spends her remaining time surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
“For now, Pauline just wants to be with her family,” Steve said. “We’re deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support.”
As the family navigates the painful realities of dementia, fans across the UK continue to send prayers and memories of laughter, kindness, and the legacy of a woman who made millions smile.
And as Charlie bravely summed it up — even through tears — “She may not remember who we are, but we’ll remember for her.”
