As Lil Wayne was performing at the BET Awards, viewers flocked to social media with a new understanding of why the singer wasn’t asked to perform at the Super Bowl.

The 2025 BET Awards have already kicked off, with a star-studded audience and a lineup featuring multiple music performances.

This year’s awards are hosted by comedian and actor Kevin Hart and will be held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, California. Performers on the night included Teyana Taylor, GloRilla, Playboi Carti, Leon Thomas, and Lil Wayne, whose stage presence wasn’t up to viewers’ standards.

During the award ceremony, the rapper performed his hit 2008 single A Milli as well as two songs off his new album The Carter VI, which his fans warned him not to do.

On X, one said, “I hope Lil Wayne doesn’t perform his new album.”

Mimicking Kevin Hart’s introduction of the rapper, another added: “’The brilliantly talented Lil Wayne…’As long as we don’t count that recent album…”

Once his performance begun, critics used his “disappointing” set as an example of why Kendrick Lamar was asked to perform at the Super Bowl and not Lil Wayne.

A viewer wrote: “Lil Wayne be proving the superbowl point with every performance.”

Someone else chimed in: “still trying to figure out what yall thought lil wayne was finna do on that superbowl stage.”

“Y’all wanted Lil Wayne and that voice to perform at the Superbowl?” a third questioned.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, the rapper admitted he went out of his way to be “a part of things I’ve never been a part of,” in hopes of performing at the Super Bowl, which was held in his hometown.

After the snub, Lil Wayne doesn’t plan on ever performing at the annual football competition.

“They [NFL] stole that feeling,” he said. “I don’t want to do it.”
