Coronation Street aired a series of truth bombshells on Friday night’s episode of the world’s longest-running TV soap as fan favourite Debbie Webster tied the knot with Ronnie Bailey
Coronation Street fans were left shocked as various truths came to light during Debbie Webster’s wedding. The hotelier, played by Sue Devaney, has had to deal with a range of family dramas over the past year, including the collapse of her brother Kevin’s marriage after his wife, Abi, began an affair with her brother Carl.
On top of that, she was diagnosed with vascular dementia, but was determined that nothing was going to get in the way of her big day as she prepared to tie the knot with Ronnie Bailey on Friday’s episode of the ITV soap. But in true Coronation Street style, nothing went entirely to plan as Kevin arrived at the ceremony hell-bent on revealing what he had discovered about his brother. Early this year, Kevin’s colleague Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) was left wheelchair-bound after being injured in a hit-and-run, with the identity of the driver being left a mystery until now.
‌
On New Year’s Day, Kevin discovered footage of Carl climbing into the car that hit Tyrone, and during a tense moment with ex-wife Abi, she let slip to him that she had found out about his plans to return to Germany, which is where he lived for most of his life before turning up on the Manchester backstreet some months ago. Just as the ceremony got underway, Kevin told Abi: “He needs showing up for what he is. He needs to pay. And if you won’t, I will.”
‌
During the wedding reception, Kevin started his speech and said he had a video to show everyone, but when he pressed play, it had been changed to a video of himself and his son Jack dancing to Kylie Minogue classic Can’t Get You Out Of My Head. Wedding guests restrained Kevin as he tried to lunge at Carl and demanded to know where Jack’s laptop was. He raged: “He was driving the car what hit Tyrone! It was you, I’ve got proof!” But Carl denied it all, and the whole stunt had seemed to backfire on the mechanic as even Tyrone refused to believe him.
A furious Abi then cornered Carl later on in his suite and declared: “I think you probably did drive that car into Tyrone, and Kevin had proof.” At that moment, Carl pulled Jack’s laptop and dropped it on the floor. Realising her mistake in setting up their whole affair, Abi said: “Kevin is a better man than you’ll ever be,” and Carl cruelly branded the whole thing as “just a bit of fun” anyway.
‌
On the verge of tears, Abi said: “I threw my life up in the air for you. I hurt everyone I cared about. I risked my son’s happiness,” but Carl had zero sympathy for her. But there was more drama in store as bride Debbie had started to worry about Carl, and was hesitant to believe Kevin during his outburst, so she later went to Carl to demand the truth. Fans of the programme will know that last week, Carl received the news that his mum, Elaine, had passed away, and that Debbie had failed to tell him that she had received a call from her telling her she was ill.
When Debbie asked Carl to explain exactly what had happened with Tyrone, Carl produced an old Post-it note and said: “Truth? Let’s talk about the truth. Call Elaine back. It’s from your flat. So? So my mum called you, and you called you back. It’s ticked! It’s done, it happened. You spoke to my mum before she died and didn’t tell me?! You said that you hadn’t spoken to her, you promised me that you’d had no idea that she was dying until she had gone.”
‌
Struggling to deny it, Debbie tried to blame it on her dementia, but Carl refused to take that as an excuse, and so Debbie brought up the fact that he had had a bad relationship with her.
Carl fumed: “So you were protecting me?! Oh, thanks very much, sis! But I don’t need it. And I could have sorted things out with her. She could’ve apologised to me. She could’ve told me that she loved me. But you took that away, didn’t you? Didn’t you?!” At that point, Carl stormed ou,t and Debbie was left in floods of tears.
Fans immediately reacted to all the drama had just unfolded, with one writing on X: “Carl is a massive piece of s***!” whilst another said: “Oh Carl is nasty,” and a third wrote: “Abi & Carl finally arguing over what he’s been doing to her. I’ve been waiting for this moment.”
‌
Some fans took umbrage with the way Kevin had acted however, with one viewer writing on Reddit: “The Kevin part was annoying too, could he not just said it out loud in front of everyone instead of acting so erratically which made him look like the crazy one or had just gone straight to the police with the evidence since he did end up ruining Debbie’s day anyway,” and another agreed as they said: “Kevin couldn’t wait till after Debbie’s wedding! Now that just p***** me off, they couldn’t give her one day”
Little is known about Carl’s past, but what has been established is that he grew up in Germany with his parents Bill and Elaine Webster. Bill was the father of Kevin (Michael Le Vell) and Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney), and their mother Alison never appeared on the programme, having died in 1980. Carl was then born to Bill and Elaine off-screen in 1986.
When Ronnie remarked to Debbie last week just how odd that Elaine had not got in touch with the family, Debbie revealed: “She tried to. Recently. I just… I just forgot to tell him. With everything going on, it just… it just went out of my head.
“I haven’t told Carl – I can’t. He’d never forgive me. Ronnie, don’t tell him, will you? I feel terrible, really terrible.” When Ronnie reassured Debbie that it wasn’t her fault and she didn’t do it on purpose, she didn’t respond and simply gave a weird look.
