The Investigation of Lucy Letby features interviews with detectives, a grieving mum and Letby’s best friend.

Netflix fans have been given an insight into convicted murderer Lucy Letby’s mindset as she talks about life in prison.

Former neonatal nurse Letby was convicted of murdering seven babies and the attempted murder of seven other newborns during her time working at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.

Netflix’s latest documentary The Investigation of Lucy Letby explores the events leading up to her arrest, as well as various interviews with those closest to the case.

Among those spoken to was Letby’s university best friend and fellow nurse “Maisie” whose name and voice and visual identity “digitally disguised” to protect her anonymity.

“Maisie” shares a series of photographs from their time together at university before reading out an extract of a letter that Letby had sent her from prison.

It reads: “There are no words to describe my situation but knowing that I have your friendship, regardless, is so important and special to me.

“I have my own room and toilet [in prison]. I’m able to shower each day and go outside for a walk.

“Getting outside is so important, even though it’s a bit chilly.”

She then goes on to talk about her cats who she is seen saying goodbye to in the police footage when Letby is arrested.

She continues: “I miss Tigger and Smudge so much. It’s heartbreaking that they can’t understand why I’m no longer there. They must think I’m a terrible mummy.”

“Mum and dad are taking good care of them though and are no doubt spoiling them.

“I’m trying to do all that I can to remain strong and positive.

“I’m determined to get through this. I will not give up.”

At this point, “Maisie”, overwhelmed with emotion, stops reading the letter and apologises to the camera.

Letby was sentenced to a whole life order so she won’t ever be considered for release or bail.
