After more than three decades in the bright New York studio, veteran host Steve Doocy has officially announced he will step away from hosting live on the famous Fox & Friends set and move to a new role: working remotely.
The announcement, shared on May 1, surprised and touched many longtime viewers.
Born in 1956 in Iowa, Steve joined Fox News in 1996 and helped launch Fox & Friends in 1998. For over 30 years, he woke up at 3:30 a.m. every day to reach the Manhattan studio in time to lead lively discussions with high-profile guests, from former President Donald Trmp to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Talking about the decision, Steve admitted, “It’s a great job, but the hours are tough.” He joked that every morning when his alarm clock rang at 3:30, his wife Kathy would say, “Time to make the donuts,” recalling an old Dunkin Donuts ad. AI even calculated that his early alarms have gone off over 6,800 times – an impressive number by any standard.

Steve emphasized that he’s not retiring and not leaving the show, just changing how he appears: he’ll still be a host, but working from home about three days a week. He shared that he had been discussing this plan for a while with Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott, to find a new path that fits both his career and family life.
One major reason for this decision is family time. “When my kids were growing up, I never had breakfast with them. But starting tomorrow, I’ll be able to have breakfast with my children and grandchildren whenever I can,” he said. Steve and his wife have three children: Peter (a Fox News reporter), Mary, and Sally.

Steve plans to move to Florida, where he can travel easily to cover stories across the U.S. – from the Carolinas and Florida Keys to the Mar-a-Lago area. He playfully called himself the “coast-to-coast host.” His colleagues Brian Kilmeade, Ainsley Earhardt, and Lawrence Jones will keep hosting live from New York.
Beyond TV, Steve is also known for his two best-selling books about family and fatherhood. Even with this role change, he reassured viewers: “You’ll still hear my voice and opinion loud and clear.”
At age 67, Steve Doocy begins a new chapter: staying close to TV while giving more time to the family moments he missed during decades of early mornings on live television.
