OPINION: Harry and Meghan aren’t helping themselves.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are making a huge error when it comes to their US audience, and they’re ruining their relationship overseas too. They were in Los Angeles this weekend, so would have been able to attend the Super Bowl on February 8, one of the biggest sporting events in the US, but the pair decided to give it a miss.  The Super Bowl is a massive event and is flooded with A-listers, but Harry and Meghan were not to be seen.

The reason this is important is that in the UK, sporting events have always traditionally been supported by the royals, whether it be Ascot or the World Cup, and Super Bowl was the key opportunity for Harry and Meghan to do that for the US. But, for some bizarre reason, they decided to give it a miss. Whether they deemed it beneath them or inconvenient, the message lands the same. The Super Bowl is the who’s who of Hollywood royalty, but they seem to think they’re above it. Deciding not to go is almost like digging their own grave in the US. It seemed they had picked where their loyalties lay, but apparently not; they can go to a baseball match when it’s convenient for them, but when it’s the biggest US sporting event of the year, they’re nowhere to be seen. For a couple who “picked” America, this looks like a rejection of it. Honestly? It’s a mistake that could prove fatal for them.

But what makes the whole thing awful? They were both in the area, and it was genuinely expected that they would be there after Meghan attended a gala in LA. In fact, PR expert Rochelle White told Daily Express that the pair attending the Super Bowl was the perfect way to put on their “united front”. People expected that this year would be a big one for them, with it expected to become a “regular appearance” for the royals; snubbing it again is just another nail in the coffin for their US placement.

They already started burning bridges after all the drama with the Kardashians, and now they’ve torched what was left. Choosing not to turn up doesn’t make them mysterious; it makes them out of touch.

It was reported that they asked for their images to be removed from Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday party because they didn’t want to upset the royals, as they wanted to rebuild their relationship with them. And after a source close to the pair told Express.co.uk that they’re planning to spend more time with the King with trips over the summer planned, and Harry’s heart “will always be with the UK”.

But at the moment, they haven’t rebuilt their relationship with the UK, and instead are continuing to break relationships within the US, which is making the snub of the Super Bowl an utterly fatal mistake; it’ll only go against them long-term. It’s been six years, they need to pick their side and stick with it. It’s like Harry and Meghan have been living in limbo for years, and it’s unclear as to why they would want to miss the Super Bowl, which could have been a major image overhaul for them. It’s the clearest sign yet that they still don’t know where they belong.
