Piers Morgan reflected on his controversial exit from Good Morning Britain in 2021, almost five years on from quitting

Piers Morgan insists he has no regrets about departing Good Morning Britain, nearly five years after announcing his exit. In March 2021, the broadcaster revealed he had quit the programme, following a dispute over remarks he made about Meghan Markle.

Piers has consistently expressed frustration over claims made by Prince Harry and Meghan about their life within the Royal Family, but voicing his honest views on television and later declining to apologise ultimately led to his departure.

After the couple’s explosive sit-down with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Piers admitted he didn’t believe their claims, including Meghan’s revelation about experiencing suicidal thoughts.

While sharing his thoughts on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, the 60-year-old had a heated row with his co-presenter Alex Beresford which resulted in Piers walking off the set in anger.

While the situation seemed to settle before the show concluded, Piers later announced his departure from the programme, stating his unwillingness to apologise as his reasoning.

Nearly five years on, the outspoken journalist insists that he remains committed to his decision. “It was one of the most sickening attacks on our Royal Family, a monarchy, that I have ever seen,” he said of the couple’s interview.

“I was not going to grovel and apologise to the people that perpetrated that attack. So I told them you can take your job and shove it where the tiaras don’t shine.”

Commenting on his exit at the time, ITV released a statement saying: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Ofcom was inundated with more than 50,000 complaints regarding the programme, with many viewers claiming that remarks concerning mental health and suicide were damaging and offensive. In September that year however, ITV was cleared by Ofcom.

Looking back on his time on the show, he told Woman Magazine: “I did it for five years getting up, and managed to negotiate my way to a 4.30/5am start by the end, but it is brutal.

“And then you do two-and-a-half or three years of live television, that takes all the adrenaline out and is really hard on the body, you get to midday and you’re absolutely exhausted!”.

After his departure, Piers went on to present his TalkTV programme Piers Morgan Uncensored from 2022 to 2024, before departing the network and transferring the show to YouTube.

From September 2025, a weekly compilation programme featuring highlights from the YouTube episodes has been broadcast on Channel 5.

Moreover, while he stepped down from his Good Morning Britain position, he hasn’t completely cut ties with ITV.

Earlier this year, he reunited with his former co-host Susanna Reid and Ed Balls on the show to discuss an interview he conducted with US President Donald Trump.

More recently, he has featured as a commentator on This Morning, offering his thoughts on current news stories.
