OPINION: Meghan Markle has given another silent dig at the UK and, quite frankly, her husband, with her latest decision

At this point, I don’t think anyone can say they’re even remotely surprised at what Meghan Markle does, but her decision to not wear a poppy is just shocking.

For a number of reasons, I would have expected her to put the poppy on her dress, especially if she’s heading out with Prince Harry, who proudly wore a pin on his tux.

They joined a parade of famous faces at Kris Jenner’s James Bond themed 70th birthday party in Beverly Hills on Saturday, so with that many A-listers in one room, it would have been the perfect time to loudly and proudly wear the pin ahead of Remembrance Day; something which has deep meaning for Harry.

But alas, it seems Meghan’s outfit was more important than wearing a poppy upon her chest, as her husband went it alone with the striking pin and Meghan simply opted for a plain black gown with a slit in the leg. No hint of red to be seen.

Harry, meanwhile, wore a black tuxedo and bore the poppy on his left as he grabbed the hand of his wife and headed into the event.

Meghan needs to decide what it is that she’s doing, frankly. She seems to be mixing between being a US celebrity who doesn’t care about her royal life, to being the woman who reminds people that her title is the Duchess of Sussex.

If she’s the Duchess of Sussex, we expect to see a poppy on her chest, don’t we? She lived in the UK, she knows what it means to the country, she’s attended Remembrance services before.

On Saturday night, she even saw her husband opt to wear his own poppy, but didn’t bat an eye at the thought of doing the same thing, and Harry appeared visibly frustrated as he headed into the Kardashian bash with his wife.

Outside of being a UK tradition, the poppy is pretty symbolic for Harry, it symbolises remembrance of those who died in military service, Harry served in the British Army himself for 10 years and completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan; it’s not just a tradition for him.

After Harry left the military he made veterans’ welfare one of his central causes, most notably with what he’s done with the Invictus Games. The poppy now also symbolises family for him, as it’s tradition for the Royal Family to attend the Remembrance Sunday service, poppy in tow.

His family has years of military lineage behind them, he has such a personal connection to the poppy, so honestly his wife not coming out in support of that is embarrassing. She knows that she’s making a statement by not wearing one, but the question is what statement is she trying to make?

Is it not supporting Harry, not supporting the UK, distancing herself from the royals even further because she knows they’d all be wearing one today? Regardless, it’s not a smart move from her, she should know better.
