Everyone in the combat sports community was celebrating recent wins and enjoying time off, but life can change in an instant. Anthony Joshua was involved in a brutal accident in Nigeria, where he also lost his coaches, Latz and Sina, who were two of his closest friends. In that interview from a few months ago, he showed himself as a deeply thoughtful person who genuinely appreciates everything life has given him. The tragic loss of two people so close to him will require time and healing, and fans everywhere are wishing him strength as he recovers and processes the loss. In that same interview, Joshua shared his perspective, saying:

“Like everything that I chase and everything that I want to own to make me feel relevant on this earth is not so important because I can’t take it with me. What’s guaranteed is death.”

The former heavyweight champion also explained that the only thing that truly matters is living life to the best of one’s ability. Joshua recently secured a win over Jake Paul and had plans to face Tyson Fury in 2026, but those plans will now have to wait as he focuses on recovering from his injuries first.

Reports indicate that the crash occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan road when the car collided with a parked truck. The crash badly damaged the left side of the car. Ayodele and Ghami were sitting there and sadly lost their lives. Joshua and the driver were on the other side and narrowly survived, showing just how close the incident was to being even more devastating.

Following the crash, some online comments sparked anger. A British politician made hurtful remarks about Joshua and his background, which many people called unfair and cruel. At the same time, UFC fighter Bryce Mitchell shared a strange theory, blaming the crash on Joshua’s recent win over Jake Paul.

While these comments spread, donations have come in quickly to honor Joshua’s trainer and close friend, Kevin “Latif” Ayodele. The fundraiser has raised over $180,000 and will fund the construction of a mosque and a water borehole in his name. It started soon after a deadly crash in Nigeria that also took the life of Sina Ghami.
