John Fury, the boxing trainer and father of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has been ordered to pay £1,574 after magistrates ruled he failed to disclose who was behind the wheel of his vehicle when it was captured by motorway cameras, committing an offence.
The 60-year-old former bare-knuckle fighter’s 1992 Mercedes 190E was detected on a smart motorway stretch of the M6 between Keele and Stoke last July.
North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard on Monday that the Wilmslow resident did not respond to police requests for driver information within the legally required 28-day period.
This resulted in a breach of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Prosecutor Charlotte Morgan told the court that on July 14, a Home Office-approved detection device recorded an offence involving the motor vehicle, with the information automatically transmitted to Staffordshire Police.
A notice of prosecution was dispatched via Royal Mail two days later, on July 16 2024.
Reading from a police statement, Ms Morgan explained that a final reminder was subsequently sent by second-class post to Fury at his Cheshire address.
The statement read: “I have checked the computer system for a reply but there is no record of a reply being received from the defendant John Fury.”

Fury, who resides in Styal, Wilmslow, entered a not guilty plea but chose not to appear at the hearing on Monday.
Despite his absence, magistrates determined the charge had been proven against him.
Lead magistrate Darrell Wood announced the penalty.
He said: “Mr Fury will be fined £660 based on the assumed weekly income of £440, plus £650 in costs and £264 in victim surcharge.”

He added: “The overall fine of £1,574 is to be paid with 28 days.”
The court calculated the fine using an estimated weekly earnings figure of £440 in the absence of verified income details from the defendant.
A separate allegation that Fury had driven along a closed motorway lane was thrown out by the court.
Josh Fury is due to step into the ring on April 11, with a fight arranged against former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch.

Makhmudov is an experienced heavyweight with a knockout ratio of over 90 per cent.
