GB News host Dawn Neesom halted regular programming to announce that Morgan McSweeney has resigned as Sir Keir Starmer’s Chief of Staff. The Prime minister issued a statement following his colleague’s resignation, sharing: “It’s been an honour working with Morgan McSweeney for many years. He turned our party around after one of its worst-ever defeats and played a central role in running our election campaign.

“It is largely thanks to his dedication, loyalty and leadership that we won a landslide majority and have the chance to change the country.” Having worked closely with Morgan in Opposition and in Government, I have seen his commitment to the Labour Party and to our country every day. Our party and I owe him a debt of gratitude, and I thank him for his service.”

In response to this, viewers commented with their predictions that Starmer would be next to resign following a difficult week for his party. One remarked: “Buckle up…. Starmer Will resign. ” Another replied: “SO the first one bites the dust AS HE SHOULD! and as McSweeney has said so clearly, SO MUST STARMER!”(sic)

“Starmer will be gone in the next 24 hours. No way will he be around to sacrifice his worthless, lying, inept self at PMQ’s on Wednesday,” typed a third.

Meanwhile, Neesom read out a tweet from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who wrote: “It’s about time, but once again with the PM, it is somebody else’s fault. Keir Starmer needs to take responsibility for his own decisions.” It comes as many MPs blamed him for the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US – and he has said in his resignation statement that the decision was “wrong”.

In his departing statement from Downing Street, McSweeney said: “After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself.

When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment, and I take full responsibility for that advice. In public life, responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside. This has not been an easy decision.
