BBC Breakfast paused its regular programming on Sunday morning to broadcast a special message from King Charles. Presenters Roger Johnson and Rachel Burden introduced a video featuring the monarch reflecting on a significant milestone.

Roger explained: “Now this week marks 50 years since King Charles, who then, of course, was the Prince of Wales, launched an initiative with one overarching goal, to help vulnerable young people to get the resources that they need to thrive.”

Rachel added: “The Prince’s Trust, which is now, of course, known as the King’s Trust, has since supported more than 1.3 million young people to develop essential life skills and access job opportunities. And to mark this success, the King has spoken about what the trust means to him.”

In the footage, King Charles reflected: “In the beginning, I hoped that by supporting young people to develop their latent skills and to find work or training.”

He continued: “The trust would perhaps be able to help change some individuals’ lives for the better. As you can perhaps imagine, I am so very pleased and proud that the trust work continues to go from strength to strength, having, in that time, helped over 1.3 million young people grow their confidence, continue in education, secure sustainable jobs, and over 92,000 young people in the UK alone having been supported to start a business, thus enabling them all to build brighter futures,” reports the Express.

“King Charles,” Roger announced as the segment drew to a close, before welcoming their guests, including Matt Wane, who had received vital help and support from the trust after coming across a post on Instagram.

He subsequently revealed the devastating news that he had also lost his father.

Rachel observed, “And, in fact, Matt, in your case, it was also a post on Instagram. I think that led you to the King’s Trust.

“Yeah, absolutely. I lost my dad in 2024, and it was quite a difficult time,” Matt revealed before continuing, “And I didn’t really have much purpose, kind of going on in life.

“And I saw an advert on Instagram, and I thought, ‘I might as well just have a go at this’. And it’s one of the best things that I signed up to.”

“You’ve been your dad’s carer, hadn’t you?” Roger enquired, to which Matt responded, “Yeah, so my mum supported my dad, and I cared with her for him.

“And you were feeling, I think, during that period of time, understandably, pretty isolated,” Rachel suggested. “So the idea of then stepping out into the world is quite a big move.”

Matt continued to explain, “Yeah, you kind of lose yourself, lose your sense of purpose after a period of time like that. So it was a really great opportunity.”

When questioned about what job he was pursuing after the trust’s assistance, Matt answered, “DJ’ing.”
