Conor Benn has been criticised after comments made about his children following his shock split from Eddie Hearn.

Last week, the boxing world was shocked by the news that Benn had split with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

It was confirmed that the 29-year-old had signed for Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, ending his 10-year stint with Matchroom.

Zuffa Boxing, backed by UFC boss White and Saudi Arabia, as per Sports Illustrated, offered Benn an “eight-figure” sum.

Speaking about Benn’s decision to move away from Matchroom, Hearn said: “I just felt that the loyalty we’ve shown would never, ever put us in this position.

“I just felt… everything that we gave him, the loyalty that we gave him, the support we gave him would be enough to talk it through and get close to a number. But there wasn’t really the interest. Very surprising. Very painful. But just another moment in life that you live and learn from.”

Recently, Benn spoke about spending time with former boxer Miguel Cotto, which inspired him to move to Zuffa Boxing.

As per Boxing King Media, Benn said: “I spent some time with Miguel Cotto in Germany, he’s one of my heroes.

“He had said to me ‘The belts, they mean nothing, you wanna make sure the best decision you make is the decision you make for the best interest of your kids. That’s your legacy, you legacy is your kids.”

He continued: “And, when I look back in 10, 15 years time. That’s my job, to give my kids a better life than I had. It was a pretty good life. To open doors for my kids. I want my kids to go to private school, and I want my kids not to want or need anything in life. I want my kids to understand the benefits of hard work. I want them to see the life they have because of the decisions that I made.”

Reacting on social media, some fans were left unimpressed with Benn’s comments.

One said: “His dad was a millionaire. He makes out he was a poor street kid.”

Another tweeted: “His dad was a multimillionaire. He grew up in a mansion on Mallorca and went to a private international school. What does he mean by “giving my kids a better life than I had”??”

A third fan added: “You can already send your kids to private school, probably 50 times over.”

However, some backed Benn’s decision, one wrote: “To be fair I actually see his point. If I had the opportunity to give my kids an even better life then I would do that. His kids in 25 years time won’t be thinking “Oh, my dad left Eddie.” They’ll just be thankful he made the decisions that he made.”

Another fan said: “This is the correct answer. Conor Benn is where he is today, because of his father Nigel Benn.”
