The announcement proved particularly poignant for Kelvin after the vet had previously delivered the devastating news that Ruby had lost her calf, meaning the family would need to wait patiently while she made a full recovery.

But in the latest episode, the vet brought brilliant news – confirming Ruby was pregnant and her calf was roughly 14 weeks along, meaning the Fletcher family’s Cheshire farm would soon welcome a new arrival.

Speaking before the vet’s visit, the ex-Emmerdale actor explained, “Several weeks ago, we got the sad news that our much-loved cow Ruby miscarried her calf.

He added, “We’ve got Hugo the vet here, and we’ve got all our cows in the shed, and then we’ll get Ruby in, and all being well, she’s back in calf, and she’ll be calving not too long after Cherry, because the plan is obviously the Royal Cheshire Show 2025.

“Four children and the young handlers. That’s my that’s my dream from last year. So fingers crossed.”

Yet discovering whether Ruby was carrying a calf wasn’t Kelvin’s sole concern, as vet Hugo had also arrived at the farm to test the cattle herd for TB.

TB remains a persistent infectious disease that continues to affect certain regions across England and Wales. Hugo had the task of taking two hair patches from each cow to check for any signs of disease.

Kelvin shared the harsh reality with viewers, stating, “Anybody who keeps cattle has to go through this every six months.

“If you do get a reaction, and if they deem it conclusive, that animal needs to be culled. It’s devastating on your herd.”

As Hugo examined Ruby, he informed Kelvin, “Okay, so we’ve got a pregnancy.

“So she is three months in calf, 12 weeks, possibly a bit more, actually, looking at the size of the legs, 14 weeks, so a bit late for show season, but I think we were expecting that one.”

A smiling Kelvin responded, “Yeah, we were. That’s good news, she’s back in calf. That’s the main thing, and it’s healthy. So she’s unfortunately gonna miss the Cheshire show.”

He later expressed his joy, saying, “I’m so thrilled for Ruby. She produced such a cracking calf last year. I just hope this one is a simpler birth.”
