Prime Minister Keir Starmer was also almost left red-faced as he narrowly avoided a humiliating fall and potentially dragging Prince William down with him. The politician and the royal were live on ITV as they made a joint arrival in Brazil for the COP30 climate summit. However, as they emerged from the aircraft, Starmer took a stumble but quickly caught his footing before being launched down the steps. While Prince William, unbeknownst to the near miss, smoothly walked down the staircase.
However, viewers spotted the trip and quickly took to social media to mock the UK leader. This included ITV’s royal editor Chris Ship, who reshared the clip on X/Twitter. Taking to the caption, the broadcaster penned: “Did I spot a near miss(hap) at the top of the plane steps as Prince William and the Prime Minister arrived together in Belém for @Cop30noBrasil??.” This invited a flurry of comments mocking Starmer, as one laughed: “Wouldn’t that have been glorious.”

A second claimed: “He was making sure he was close to William and nearly lost his footing. Now that would have been a picture.”
“Thrusting himself forward, and subsequently stumbling. Very on brand for PM Starmer,” slammed another.
One viewer said: “That’s what you get for trying to push past the Prince of Wales….” This prompted another to echo: “Poor Keir…trying to follow Wills…and stumbling.”
Meanwhile, another joked: “Starmer falling down those steps would have been something.” As an ITV viewer fumed: “But he could quite easily have taken William down with him!!!!!”
During the COP30, Prince William delivered his first-ever speech at the summit on behalf of King Charles, as he said that taking action on climate change offers “a profound opportunity”.
As he addressed world leaders at the climate summit in Belem, Brazil, the royal also said it was “a privilege” to step into his father’s shoes and give a keynote speech at COP30.
The Prince revealed that he had asked for his father’s input on his speech and paid tribute to King Charles’ love of nature in it. “I grew up with my father, the King, talking about the power of nature and the importance of harmony in the natural world, a subject he has championed for over five decades,” he said.
“It’s a privilege to also represent him here today, as well as everyone else who has championed this cause for so many years.”
Whereas Starmer defended the UK and stated: “Britain isn’t waiting to act, we’re leading the way, as we promised. Clean energy doesn’t just mean energy security, so Putin can’t put his boot on our throat: it means lower bills for working families in every part of the UK.”
