Viewers have hailed it the “best Netflix series ever made”.

Netflix viewers are still calling for more Mindhunter, the platform’s widely-praised crime drama based on the FBI agents who researched a type of murderer only beginning to be understood in the 1970s — serial killers.

Mindhunter followed the birth of modern serial-killer profiling and the creation of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit. It featured two fictional investigators, Holden Ford and Bill Tench, as they attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying how they think.

“In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters,” notes the show description.

Over the course of two series and 19 episodes, Mindhunter’s run cemented its status as Netflix’s best show to many fans.

Together, the two interview infamous serial killers from Charles Manson to the BTK killer and the show was known for casting uncanny lookalikes.

The show shares its name with Mindhunter, the autobiographical book by the late FBI agent John Douglas, one of the first criminal profilers in the United States.

David Fincher, the director of Fight Club and Se7en, served as an executive producer alongside Charlize Theron. Since Mindhunter last aired in 2019, Fincher has downplayed the chances of another series.

However, more Mindhunter might not be completely off the table. Actor Holt McCallany, who plays Bill Tench, hinted last summer that the show could come back in a different form.

“So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance,” he told ScreenRant. “I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

Until then, old fans and new can revisit the acclaimed show on Netflix. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first series has an impeccable 97% approval rating that was later topped by the second series’ 99% score.

“Mindhunter is probably the best thing Netflix ever did. Casting, writing, cinematography,” shared a viewer on Reddit.

Another echoed: “Mindhunter is the best Netflix series ever made in my opinion. David Fincher is a genius. I’m so sad they dropped the making of season 3…”

The Boston Globe’s review of the first series reads: “The scenes are seductively paced, the tone is almost noir, the period detail is solid but not distracting, and the soundtrack (including, of course, the Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer”) is always on point.”
