BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent joked “we’re in trouble” after an awkward on-air blunder left the studio in stitches during a live broadcast.
BBC Breakfast took an unexpected and rather hilarious turn on Tuesday morning (February 3) when presenter Sally Nugent found herself red-faced following a slip-up during a live segment. The 54-year-old host was back on the famous red sofa alongside co-host Jon Kay, guiding viewers through the day’s biggest headlines, when the conversation suddenly veered into chaos.
Midway through the programme, the presenting duo began discussing exciting news for Doctor Who fans. It was revealed that several iconic pieces of memorabilia from the long-running sci-fi series are set to go under the hammer — marking the first time BBC Studios has ever made such items available for public sale. Even better, part of the proceeds will go towards BBC Children in Need, adding a charitable twist to the announcement.
As Jon Kay attempted to explain the details, things quickly went off-script. With a grin, he said:
“It’s the first time these items have gone on sale, and good news — all the profits, no matter how much they sell for… oh. Not all the profits. Some of the profits are going to Children in Need.”
Realising what had just been said, Sally immediately burst into laughter — and panic.

“We’ve just made it all of the profits,” she joked, clearly mortified. “So there we go, now they’ve got to give all of the money. We’ve forced them! We’ll be in trouble. Carol, help!”
The presenter dramatically appealed to weather expert Carol Kirkwood to rescue them from the awkward moment, but Carol was having none of it. Instead of stepping in, she cheerfully leaned into the chaos, choosing to share her own excitement about the upcoming auction.
“I don’t know — I quite fancy the Dalek or the TARDIS, to be honest with you,” Carol admitted, prompting laughter across the studio.
Jon Kay couldn’t resist poking fun at the comment, quipping:
“You fancy a Dalek?”
The studio groaned in mock horror as Sally laughed along, burying her face in embarrassment while viewers at home enjoyed the unscripted moment.
Despite the brief blunder, the light-hearted exchange only added to the show’s charm — with fans often praising BBC Breakfast for moments like these that prove even seasoned presenters can get flustered live on air.
And while Sally jokingly warned they’d be “in trouble”, the playful mishap served as a reminder that sometimes the most memorable TV moments are the ones that don’t go quite to plan.
