Presenter Ranvir Singh interrupted Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning to bring a heartbreaking news update. The red breaking banner flashed across the screen as she announced that there had been at least 22 deaths in Thailand.

The ITV host shared that a crane being used to build a new railway tragically fell on a train running on tracks nearby. It was travelling east from East Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani. Ranvir added that rescuers are at the scene searching for people who may be trapped. Fans of the breakfast TV show were heartbroken as they took to Twitter/X to comment. One person wrote: “That is really awful.” Another added: “Terrible,” while a third penned: “How sad.” According to official records, the train was carrying at least 195 people. At least 80 people were wounded from the collision, with a one-year-old being the youngest injured, and the oldest being 59.

There are 55 of those injured being treated at a hospital in Sikhio. Most of them sustained minor injuries and are currently under observation.

However, officials have said that six people who are seriously injured had been transferred to other hospitals.

According to Thailand’s Public Health Ministry, all injured and non-injured passengers have now been removed from the scene. Thailand’s transport minister has ordered a “thorough and comprehensive” investigation into the incident.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phipat Ratchakitprakarn has said that officials are verifying the identities and closely monitoring the injured involved in the tragic accident.

He added that any of the dead who were train workers will be compensated.

One eyewitness said that the train was “cut in half”. Local resident Mitr Intrpanya told AFP news agency that he heard a loud noise and two large explosions.

The 54-year-old explained: “When I went to see what had happened, I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages.

“The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half.”
