BBC Breakfast hosts Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell delivered the latest headlines on Wednesday morning

A BBC Breakfast host announced a tragic death just minutes into Wednesday’s (January 21) live broadcast.

The latest edition of the hit morning programme was presented by Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell, who updated viewers on the latest news from across the UK and around the world. Carol Kirkwood was also in the studio to deliver regular weather forecasts, while John Watson and Peter Ruddick shared news about the day’s sports and prison pay, respectively.

Just moments into the show, Sarah announced that another train crash had taken place in Spain, just days after a high-speed collision killed at least 40 people.

“A train driver has been killed and more than 30 people have been injured after another rail crash in Spain – the second in three days. Officials believe the crash near Barcelona was caused by the collapse of a wall,” Sarah revealed.

According to local officals, on Tuesday (January 20) evening, the Rodalies train collided with a retaining wall that fell onto the track between Gelida and Sant Sadurní. Catalonia regional fire Inspector Claudi Gallardo said all passengers had been removed from the train.

In a pre-recorded segment, BBC reporter Barry Caffrey explained: “Ambulance crews [are] dealing with the aftermath of the derailment which happened outside Barcelona yesterday evening. Local officials said the Rodalies commuter train collided with a wall, which fell onto the track between Gelida and Sant Sadurní.

“The incident occurred as heavy storms battered eastern Spain. Coastal areas on the east and north west of the country are on high alert because of the weather. This train crash comes just two days after two high-speed trains collided in Andalusia in one of the worst Spanish rail accidents in more than a decade.

“The King and Queen of Spain visited victims in hospital yesterday, and there was a mass for the victims in the city of Huelva last night. 42 people are known to have died in Sunday’s crash in Andalusia, and investigations are now underway to establish what happened in both of these train crashes.”

Eleven ambulances were on the scene of the second crash in Gelida, Catalonia – around 35km west of Barcelona – treating those injured, emergency services said. The local fire service said 35 crews had been sent to the area.

Emergency services said they had evacuated some of the injured to nearby Moisès Broggi, Bellvitge, and Vila Franca hospitals. As well as the five seriously injured people, six were in a less serious condition, and 26 were in a “mild” condition.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez addressed the devastating crash on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “All my affection and solidarity with the victims and their families.”

Elsewhere on today’s BBC Breakfast, Jon and Sarah shared political updates as US President Do.n.ald.tru.m.p. prepared to land in Davos for the World Economic Forum. They also examined driving test cheating that’s on the rise, and the government’s £15 billion Warm Homes Plan.
