The Prince and Princess of Wales are one of the Royal Family’s most admired couples. Married since 2011 and parents to three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, they remain deeply devoted to each other. According to royal biographer Katie Nicholl, however, during the early stages of their romance, Prince William once left his future wife, Kate Middleton, in tears after unexpectedly altering a key holiday plan.

Before their marriage, tradition dictated that William would spend Christmas at Sandringham with the Royal Family, while Kate would return to her parents’ home in Bucklebury. In 2006, the couple had arranged to celebrate New Year’s Eve together as a compromise.

However, William changed his mind at the last minute, allegedly notifying Kate over the phone on St Stephen’s Day, The Mirror reported.

Katie Nicholl is a New York Times best selling author, journalist and broadcaster who has been writing about the British royal family for nearly 20 years.

She wrote in The Making of a Royal Romance published for the first time in 2011: “William had been having second thoughts and sat down with his father and his grandmother to have a frank discussion about his future with Kate.

“Both advised him not to hurry into anything.”

The abrupt decision left Kate deeply upset and uncertain about the stability of their relationship. Weeks later, in 2007, William temporarily ended their romance, according to Ms Nicholl.

The couple reconciled a few months later, ultimately becoming engaged in 2010 and marrying in 2011.

The Prince and Princess of Wales now focus on maintaining a private family life, but William has occasionally offered glimpses into their daily routine.

Speaking to Brazilian television host Luciano Huck a few weeks ago, he said jokingly: “I’m the taxi driver, Luciano. Taxi driver, sports days, matches, playing in the garden, where I can. School run, most days. I mean, Catherine and I share it. She probably does the bulk of it.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales first met in 2001 while studying at St Andrews University in Scotland. The Princess of Wales was pursuing a degree in History of Art, while the Prince initially embarked on an Art History course before later switching his focus to Geography.

It was during this time that the pair began to form a close bond, which would eventually blossom into a lasting romance.
