Kavanaugh Assass!nat!on Plotter Nicholas Roske Now Identifies as “Sophie” Ahead of Sentencing
The Maryland man who admitted to plotting the assass!nat!on of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022 is now asking the court to call him “Sophie” — and to be addressed with female pronouns — just weeks before he learns his fate.
Nicholas John Roske, 28, pleaded guilty earlier this year to attempted murd3r of a United States judge after traveling to the conservative justice’s Maryland home with a Glock 17 pist0l, two magazines of ammunition, a knife, zip ties, duct tape, pepper spray, and burglary tools. Prosecutors say Roske had flown across the country with one mission: to k!ll Kavanaugh over his views on aborti0n and g2n rights.
According to a new court filing obtained by Fox News, Roske’s attorneys now refer to their client as “Ms. Roske” and “Sophie” throughout their sentencing memorandum. A footnote in the document clarifies that Roske’s legal name has not changed but that “out of respect” the defense will use the preferred name and pronouns.
The sudden request comes as federal prosecutors are seeking a 30-year prison sentence, arguing that Roske was fully prepared to carry out a p0litically motivated killing that would have shaken the foundations of the nation’s highest court.
Roske’s defense team has pointed to years of mental health struggles, including depression and anxiety, and now highlights gender identity as part of the broader context. Court records do not indicate whether Roske has undergone any medical treatment related to gender transition.
The case shocked the nation when it first broke in June 2022. Authorities said Roske took a taxi to Kavanaugh’s Chevy Chase residence in the middle of the night arm3d to the teeth. He allegedly spotted U.S. Marshals outside the home and, rattled, called 911 on himself, telling the operator he had suic!dal thoughts and had planned to kill the justice. FBI agents arrested him near the scene.
Since then, Roske has remained behind bars awaiting sentencing. The Department of Justice stressed in its filing that his actions amounted to an unprecedented attack on the judiciary, warning that leniency could embolden future threats.
Roske’s sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025 in federal court. Whether the judge acknowledges his new name in open court remains to be seen — but what is certain is that “Sophie” Roske will likely spend decades in prison for a plot that nearly rocked America’s highest court.
