There are some phone calls that change the course of a life forever. For actor Shane Richie, the message waiting on his answer machine that night was one of them — a moment frozen in time, heavy with shock, guilt and a grief he says never truly faded.

Now 61, and best known to millions as Alfie Moon in EastEnders, Shane once spoke with raw honesty about the devastating loss of his former fiancée, dancer Dawn Rodgers. Long before the fame, before the red carpets and primetime TV appearances, he was just a 21-year-old young man in love — and completely unprepared for the heartbreak that would follow.

Shane and Dawn became engaged in 1986. At the time, he was an aspiring comic, hustling for gigs, chasing the kind of career that required late nights, long absences and endless ambition.
