Coronation Street’s Carla Connor was dealt a series of “harsh truths” about her on/off relationship with DS Lisa Swain on Tuesday night’s episode. For just over a year, the factory boss had been in a relationship with police officer Lisa, and in turn, had become a stepmother figure to her teenage daughter Betsy.

The couple have gone on to become a social media sensation known as Swarla, but their much-anticipated engagement was marred when Lisa’s wife, Becky, who was said to have been killed in the line of duty in 2021, turned up out of the blue, having been part of a corrupt police cover-up.

As part of her attempt to get her family back together, Becky kidnapped Carla (Alison King) and locked her up in a wardrobe before moving her to a shipping container. Carla was then discovered by DC Kit Green, and they were all involved in a major crash as part of the programme’s crossover with Emmerdale, leading to Becky’s arrest and imprisonment. Carla then decided that she could never get back together with Lisa after learning that she had slept with Becky whilst she was being held hostage, but Roy Cropper tried to make her see otherwise.

Weatherfield legend Tracy Barlow did not mince her words when she reminded Carla how absurd it was that Lisa had ‘no idea’ that her wife was alive(Image: ITV)

On the latest instalment of the world’s longest-running TV soap, Roy was marking the anniversary of his wife Hayley’s death, who passed away in 2014, and tried to make Carla understand that life was “too short” for this sort of thing if she truly wanted to rekindle things with Lisa. But just as Carla was about to knock on the door at number six, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) passed by with a few choice words for her.

She said: “Don’t tell me you’re giving her another chance?” before Carla shot back: “Blooming heck, where did you spring from? It’s not Halloween again already, is it?” Undeterred by the insult, Tracy continued: “I never thought I’d see the day that Carla Connor goes running back to somebody that’s done the dirty on her. Fair play to Lisa, though. She must be good in bed.

“Well, she must be good on the job because she’s not any good at her actual job! She didn’t know her wife was still alive. She didn’t know you’d been kidnapped. She must have something, though, because, well, she’s not just turned you, she’s turned you into a doormat!” Furious, Carla said: “You’ve got two seconds before I come down that path and rip your head off,” prompting Tracy to smile as she was suddenly reminded of the Carla Connor she had known for years.

Later on, Betsy spoke to her mum in the Bistro and revealed to her that she had seen Carla heading to the house from her bedroom window, but by the time she had made it downstairs, she had left. Lisa still took this as a “good sign” and, with a new trailer having recently been released to tease Swarla’s future on the cobbles in the aftermath of Corriedale, fans took to social media to praise the scene between Tracy and Carla.

One fan wrote: “I’m so happy Tracy pointed out that Carla has lost herself since being with the Swains. She’s been bowing down to Lisa and sidelining her own feelings since day 1. The amount of abuse she took from Betsy in the beginning was ridiculous including a head injury. When she finally took a stand against Lisa with the Becky situation, Lisa treated her like complete garbage. Carla deserves so much better than this nonsense.”

Another said: “Everything makes sense now. AK realised thru this iconic scene the mess they dragged everyone into & warned the fans. Tracy reflects the women who, since #MeToo stand up for each other. Except Lisa & Betsy, who at the first chance turned Carla into a doormat,” whilst a third wrote: “Never thought I would start my day loving Tracy Barlow…classic #corrie scene….golden!”

A fourth said: “That Tracy and Carla scene was epic. Tracy finally giving Carla the harsh truths she needs to hear. We’ve obviously been promised a Swarla reunion but, in real life, there would be absolutely no way back from this absolute farce about the not dead wife!”

But fans of the soap couple needn’t worry, as Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks recently told The Mirror how the pair would reunite, and get their “happy ever after”. It will be the sixth marriage for Carla, who was initially married to the latePaul Connor when she debuted in 2006. She’s since married Peter Barlow twice, and has also tied the knot with Tony Gordon, who memorably died in an explosion at the knicker factory, and Nick Tilsey during her time in Weatherfield.

Kate said: “Becky was an absolute obstacle thrown their way, and her true colours have absolutely been revealed for all to see. Lisa’s finally kind of realised the extent of the manipulation and the lies that Becky’s told.

“We’ll see them starting to make their way back to each other. There’s a lot to get past, but they love each other, and that love never faltered throughout it at all. The ghost of Becky is finally being put to bed. They can move forward with their lives, and they can look forward to their future together.

“They’ll get their happy ever after, and the chance to finally be free from Becky and the drama that surrounded that story, and be happy with and content with each other. It’s gonna be a romantic spring for Carla and Lisa, which will make many people smile!”
