Janet Street Porter left Escape To The Country host Alistair Appleton scrambling with a blistering swipe after viewing a number of properties on Tuesday’s episode of the celebrity version of the BBC show.

The Loose Women star, 78, who owns an apartment in central London, wanted help finding her dream home in East Anglia that she can share with her husband Peter.

Janet, who was joined by her friend designer Christopher Woods on the programme, explained that she wants peace and quiet, distance from neighbours and a view of the sea – and had a budget of £1 million to spend.

Before heading out on the house hunt, Alistair told viewers: ‘I am going to let you in on a little secret. Just because the search starts here, doesn’t mean that it is going to finish here. So watch this space!’

The trio visited a modern bungalow priced at £960,000 in the village of Levington which Janet didn’t like, followed by a £895,000 beach house in the coastal village of Thorpeness.

Despite liking the second property, Janet brutally told Alistair: ‘The bottom line is neither house offers me solitude, they offer me the sounds of the sea and seagulls, but I think you have failed.’

Alistair replied: ‘What we’re struggling with is that there is not enough isolation…

‘I think we are going to have to go further, I think you mentioned Scotland. How do you feel about Scotland?’

Janet said: ‘Thrilled. Come up with something – there is your challenge.’

So the trio headed up north to Scotland.

Alistair told viewers: ‘We’re taking a 500-mile leap of faith to the Hebridean Islands scattered off Scotland’s west coast.’

The trio headed to Islay, located in the Inner Hebrides, to try and find a property for Janet.

The first home was given a good reception, but it was actually the second, located near the town of Port Ellen, that the broadcaster really liked.

‘Oh wow,’ Janet told the host. ‘I could see myself in this house by myself, perfectly happy.’

And she was given the opportunity to actually stay in the home overnight – which she was very happy about.

Fans watching at home were left confused because the location of Scotland wasn’t exactly what she asked for – and was actually extremely far away from East Anglia.

One said on X: ‘#EscapetotheCountry Janet’s getting her holiday to Scotland courtesy of Escape. When has anyone on this program gone to two parts of the country so wide apart.’

Meanwhile others loved how ‘honest’ she was during the search.

‘Janet Street Porter on #escapetothecountry she knows what she wants.’

‘I like Janet’s honesty about what she wants but neighbours don’t usually socialise apart from a quick hello.’

‘Janet Street Porter and I have similar requirements for the perfect house – no neighbours, views of the sea, peaceful and quiet with plenty of walks around. The big difference is that she has far more money than me!’

Earlier this week fans of Escape To The Country all had the same question on their lips after Gareth Malone’s emotional appearance on the show.

The 50-year-old choirmaster and broadcaster appeared in a segment on Monday where he took his mum house-hunting instead of his wife – which left fans baffled.

Gareth, who currently lives in London with his wife and three children, was searching for the perfect family home in Hampshire where they are eager to enjoy a quieter life.

During his mission to find a new house, Gareth took his mum Sian along with him.

However this appeared to confuse viewers who were watching from home, although the narrator explained how Gareth’s mum doesn’t live too far from him at the moment.

Taking to X, people shared their thoughts, with one person asking: ‘Gareth Malone on #escapetothecountry – why not take his wife????’

Another penned: ‘Why the hell has he taken his mother and not his wife?’

A third added: ‘Married with three kids but he house hunts with his Mum.’
