BBC politics programme Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg was interrupted just seconds into the broadcast for a piece of devastating breaking news, as anchor Kuenssberg brought the show to a halt. Starting to read the bulletins from the newspaper front pages, she told viewers: “Morning, morning. Let’s start as we always do with what is making the news this Sunday. We can bring you some breaking news this morning.

“The BBC website is leading with an incident that’s taking place on Bondi Beach in Australia. Shots have been fired and New South Wales Police in Australia say two people have been taken into custody as they respond to a developing incident. They say the operation is underway and are urging the public to avoid the area. We’ll bring you everything we know as that story develops during the next 60 minutes.”

Kuenssberg then turned to Reform UK councillor Laila Cunningham, saying: “Now, by a very strange coincidence your nephew, who’s a doctor, is nearby. Have you spoken to him this morning?”

Cunningham was told by her nephew that “at least 12 people” had been killed, adding: “I rang him to check that he was okay and he was at a beach about 10 minutes away.

“I’m just reading his text messages now. Some rumours of other Jewish areas being hit too as it’s a Jewish holiday and I think it’s quite a Jewish area. Nothing confirmed, but it seems to be a coordinated anti-Jewish attack.”

However, NSWP have confirmed that 10 people are confirmed dead, while photographs have also circulated of a heroic man tackling the suspected gunman in chilling footage.

There have been two gunmen pictured firing shots from a bridge at Bondi Beach, while members of the public fled the scene and others were attended by medics.

Police say that one of the gunmen have been killed, with the other now in police custody and injured. Two officers were also shot and injured.
