Alex Kingston was sent home after a dance-off against EastEnders star Balvinder Sopal during last week’s show (November 30). After both couples had danced a second time in the dance off, the judges delivered their verdicts, with Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse choosing to save Balvinder and Anton Du Beke deciding to save Alex. Shirley Ballas, who had the casting vote, decided to save Balvinder and Julian, securing their place in Strictly’s Musicals Week.

Former Strictly performer, Brendan Cole, 49, has shared the real reason Alex was voted out of the competition. The professional dancer described her Cha Cha to Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell as “lacking conviction” as he addressed the real reason behind her exit.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk on behalf of Sky Vegas, Brendan commented: “Craig [Revel Horwood] often uses the word ‘lacklustre’, which is exactly what Alex [Kingston’s] Cha Cha was. It looked desperate and lacklustre.

“I don’t want to kick someone when they’re down, but it looked like her mind was elsewhere – lack of attack, lack of power, lack of energy, lack of conviction.”

He added: “In the dance-off she did a better version, but it was still just nice. And nobody wants nice. Everything about her is calm and thoughtful and quiet, and she needs a shake. It just wasn’t happening.”

Last week’s leaderboard was a culmination of Blackpool Special votes and judges’ scores, as well as extra points from Saturday night’s brand-new Instant Dance challenge, where a maximum of six marks were available for the performance that impressed the judges the most.

Meanwhile, Saturday night’s show saw the return of Musicals Week.
