Stand-up comedian and actress Roseanne Barr rejected responsibility for the appalling 2018 racist tweet that derailed her career seven years ago, instead pointing fingers at a higher power.

Roseanne, also a writer-producer, had posted a racially insensitive tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former Senior Advisor to then-President Barack Obama, on what was then known as Twitter, which resulted in her cancellation of the Roseanne revival. Roseanne infamously tweeted: “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

Now, the 72-year-old Roseanne alum, in a new interview with Variety, expressed no remorse for her racist remark and blamed God for it. Roseanne said to the outlet: “The way I feel about it is God told me to do what I did, and it was a nuclear bomb.”

She also shared she was tormented by nightmares about never returning to the ABC series and then, “God woke [her] up.”

“I had my laptop there in bed, as always, and I opened it, and there was [a post with] a picture of Valerie Jarrett next to Helena Bonham Carter in full makeup as Ari in ‘Planet of the Apes,’ and they looked like Xerox copies of each other, so I captioned it,” she continued, recounting the moment.

“This was in the middle of my three-month conversations with journalists in Iran who were telling me about the loss of women’s rights there due to the Iran deal. And I was irate,” she added, saying she had that in her mind before the discriminatory tweet about Jarrett, who was Obama’s key political aide connected with the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Unyielding, the actress persists in defending her tweet, insisting it was the “perfect caption.” She told the outlet that she did not recognize Jarrett’s African-American heritage when she crafted the tweet, reports the Express US.

Roseanne, unchanging in her stance, refuted the idea that her tweet was racially motivated, maintaining: “[Other people] were so racist that they thought my tweet said Black people look like monkeys when it was about ‘Planet of the Apes,’ which is a movie about fascism.”

She clarified: “Rod Serling [Planet of the Apes screenwriter] himself said it’s about the Jews in Germany. It is not a movie about Black people.”

Back in 2018, Roseanne had claimed that Ambien was to blame for the notorious tweet and apologized to Jarrett. In the Variety article, it mentioned that she was in “Ambien and alcohol-fueled haze” before God woke her up.

Roseanne asserted that her controversial tweet led to “over 2 million Americans Googled Valerie Jarrett and the Iran deal,” stating, “That was my intent. So whatever.”

Following the scandalous tweet, ABC pulled the plug on her show ‘Roseanne’, which later resurfaced as ‘The Conners’ sans Roseanne. The network explained the continuity of her character’s absence by attributing it to an opioid overdose.

Roseanne expressed her outrage at being written out of the show, lamenting: “I felt very pi–sed off that they stole my rights and killed me. I don’t know how they answer to their shareholders for canceling me before even one sponsor pulled out.”

When the offensive tweet initially occurred, the network swiftly condemned it in a public statement: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

Roseanne Barr remains unapologetic for her controversial tweet in 2025. She shared she actually regrets apologizing for it in 2018 and to “never apologize to the Left”, claiming that her circumstances “only got worse” after she showed contrition.
