Good Morning Britain was halted for a breaking news update on Thursday, but the report sparked complaints from viewers. Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley were hosting the ITV breakfast show when they informed viewers that Elon Musk’s AI model, Grok, will no longer be able to edit photos of real people to show them in revealing clothing in jurisdictions where it is illegal.
It follows widespread concern over sexualised AI deepfakes, including from Sir Keir Starmer, who said that the matter is “disgusting” and “shameful”. Kate introduced the report, saying: “Breaking news overnight, Elon Musk has backed down in his battle with the Prime Minister over his AI model Grok and its ability to make fake sexual images of real people. Keir Starmer has threatened to take control of Grok after what he called the absolutely disgusting and shameful abuse.” Richard added that the tech millionaire’s business X (formerly Twitter) is now going to scrap the photo editing service for all users, including subscribers.

Introducing political editor Louisa James to the conversation, Richard said: “This actually looks like a pretty clear win for the Prime Minister against the wealthiest man on earth.”
She agreed with a subtle dig at the Labour government. “Yes, this is another U-turn,” she said. “But this time it is one that the government is going to be very happy to talk about.”
Just a few days ago, Elon Musk accused the Labour Party of being “fascist” and of “censorship” over their views on the AI tool.
Now, X has released a statement saying: “We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis. This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers.”
It follows that, on Monday, Ofcom announced that it was going to open an investigation into whether Grok had broken laws in this country. The government also announced that it was going to bring forward laws that would criminalise people using the tools in such a way.
Despite the positive changes, fans of the ITV show didn’t feel like enough was being done. Taking to X/Twitter, one viewer complained: “Now that this has happened, Starmer and the Labour Govt have to demand that OFCOM investigates all other platforms in which these Images can be produced, as many other platforms have more issues with regards to the production of such Images!
“If this Labour Govt and Starmer do nothing about all other platforms and these images, then clearly this has just been the Labour party vs Musk and X and not for the reasons that Starmer claimed… ‘protecting women and girls’!”
Another fumed: “Misinformation here.. It has nothing to do with Starmer, it’s a direct response to X users.”
One more added: “Yeah, because Grok is the problem, not the person doing it, just like all those vehicles that drive into people, those knives that stab people & those guns that kill! How about our government stop banning things? Also, what about the many other apps that do far worse than Grok!”
