Good Morning Britain was interrupted this morning to bring an update from Downing Street. It comes as Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to lay the foundations for tax rises in her upcoming budget this morning, as she looks to address the speculation as to what will be in it.

Ranvir Singh pointed out that the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, had warned Labour MPs that things are “worse than feared” and Ms Reeves will be addressing this on Tuesday morning. Louisa James, who was live in London, then took over the report as she said that it is expected the Chancellor will say “there has been a lot of speculation” and wants to explain why she is making “necessary” changes, as people are expecting to see tax rises. The reporter said: “It is very unusual for a Chancellor to be making a speech like this, three weeks out from the budget. This is all about laying the groundwork, softening people up and trying to minimise the fallout of what would be a very tough message for a lot of people to hear from a Chancellor who has repeatedly told that she is going to make us better off.

This time last year she told us that she would not be coming back for more.” Louisa also noted that Labour had explicitly ruled out a rise in VAT, National Insurance or income tax in its general election manifesto.

The ITV show soon cut to Rachel Reeves speaking live from Downing Street as she explained what was to come. Since the last Budget, the world has “thrown more challenges our way”, the Chancellor said, naming tariffs and inflation as two examples.

She also said that the welfare system needs reform, adding that there is “nothing progressive” about maintaining a system where one in eight young people are out of education or employment. Reeves then added that it is “already clear” that the productivity problem “inherited” from the previous government is “worse than previously thought”.

However, as the speech went on for almost 20 minutes, the ITV show cut it short and returned back to the studio, where it was heavily criticised by the presenters.

“She’s still going after what is now 18 minutes,” Ed pointed out. They then said that Reeves had delivered the lengthy speech to the “wrong audience” as her plan was not set out clearly in layman’s terms.

Referring to Reeves dodging questions from the press, the hosts asked: “What was the point in that speech?”

Susanna hit out: “I don’t understand why the Treasury took up that much airtime on breakfast television to then say ‘I’m not going to tell you what’s in the budget’.”
