BBC IN MELTDOWN: Dawn French Sparks Fury After Explosive The One Show Return Following “Disgusting” Comments — Viewers Rage “She Should’ve Been Cancelled Forever!” As Social Media War Erupts Over BBC Decision

The BBC has been plunged into yet another controversy after comedian and actress Dawn French made a high-profile appearance on The One Show — reigniting outrage over her previous remarks about the Gaza conflict and triggering a furious backlash online.
What was meant to be a light-hearted evening of entertainment quickly spiralled into chaos as angry viewers flooded social media with complaints, accusing the broadcaster of “rewarding” a celebrity they believe should have disappeared from screens permanently.
French appeared on Tuesday night’s episode alongside singer Michael Ball while presenters Angellica Bell and Clara Amfo welcomed guests to the famous sofa. The 68-year-old star was there to promote her emotional new novel Enough, which explores themes of grief, family, and self-discovery.
But for many viewers, the interview itself became almost irrelevant.
Instead, attention immediately turned to the controversy that erupted last year when French posted a politically charged video discussing the ongoing Gaza war — a clip critics branded “offensive,” “one-sided,” and “deeply insulting.”
As soon as the episode aired, furious reactions exploded online, with some viewers claiming they switched off the programme entirely after seeing French appear on screen.
One outraged viewer blasted: “How is Dawn French still on television after those disgusting comments?”
Another raged: “I’ve gone right off her. Used to love her, but not anymore.”
A third fumed: “The BBC never learns. She should’ve been cancelled forever!”
The backlash intensified as clips and screenshots from French’s previous video resurfaced across social media platforms, reigniting debate over whether celebrities should face long-term consequences for controversial political statements.
In the now-infamous video, French criticised attitudes surrounding the conflict while using sarcastic voices and exaggerated commentary to mock arguments she disagreed with. While some supporters defended the clip as satire, others accused the comedian of trivialising the horrors surrounding the war.
The reaction was immediate and brutal.
Critics accused the actress of being insensitive and dismissive toward victims of the October 7 attacks, while others claimed she had crossed a line by speaking about such a deeply emotional issue in a comedic tone.
Facing mounting criticism, French later issued a public apology, admitting the video had “appeared one-sided” and insisting she never intended to “mock, dismiss, or diminish” the suffering experienced by those affected.
She eventually removed the video and expressed regret for causing offence.
However, it is now painfully clear that many viewers have not moved on.
The BBC itself has also come under fire, with critics accusing the broadcaster of ignoring audience anger and continuing to platform controversial figures despite repeated complaints from viewers.
“This is exactly why people don’t trust the BBC anymore,” one furious social media user claimed.
Another posted: “Imagine if somebody else had said something similar. They’d never work again.”
Others questioned why the controversy was not addressed during the programme itself, accusing producers of attempting to quietly move past the scandal without accountability.
For several hours after the broadcast, Dawn French’s name trended online as thousands argued over whether the backlash was justified or whether the comedian was being unfairly targeted over political opinions.
Yet despite the outrage, French still received strong support from loyal fans who insisted the reaction had become excessive.
“Dawn French is a national treasure,” one supporter wrote.
Another commented: “People need to calm down. She apologised ages ago.”
A third added: “I could listen to her all night. She’s warm, funny, and intelligent.”
Many viewers also praised her appearance and personality during the interview itself, with some complimenting her candid discussion about ageing, writing, and confidence later in life.
Still, the divide between critics and supporters only seemed to highlight how politically charged entertainment television has become in recent years — particularly for broadcasters like the BBC, which frequently finds itself caught in culture war battles from both sides.
The incident also raises wider questions about celebrity accountability in the social media age. While some believe public figures should face lasting professional consequences for controversial remarks, others argue that apologies should allow individuals to move forward without endless punishment.
For the BBC, however, the timing could hardly be worse.
The corporation has already faced growing criticism over allegations of political bias, presenter controversies, and repeated audience complaints across several flagship programmes. Now, French’s return has only added fresh fuel to an already raging fire.
And while Dawn French may have hoped to focus attention on her heartfelt new book, much of the public conversation instead became dominated by anger, outrage, and demands for accountability.
Whether the controversy eventually fades or continues to follow her remains to be seen.
But one thing is certain: her appearance on The One Show has reopened wounds many viewers clearly never forgot — and the BBC is once again facing accusations of being completely out of touch with its audience.
