BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay offered his apologies to listeners after confessing to a blunder that would have got him “fired” at certain radio stations.

Vernon’s Radio 2 programme is among the contenders for a coveted radio accolade for their coverage of the Oasis Homecoming Concert last summer. The DJ went backstage at the band’s first gig at Heaton Park, their first concert in their home city of Manchester in 16 years.

 

The show has received a nomination at the ARIAS, going up against Sky News’s coverage of Donald Trump’s State Visit, The King’s Trust Carol Concert on Magic Classical and Live Aid Relived on Greatest Hits Radio.

Following a speech of around three minutes detailing the effort he and his team had devoted to the Oasis Homecoming Concert coverage, Vernon acknowledged he would have been “fired” by a commercial radio station for the lengthy interruption.

He wished the show “good luck” while praising his team, adding: “You deserve a little pat on the back,” reports the Mirror.

Vernon went on to say: “Let me just step down off this box. That was quite a moment wasn’t it? You know if we were on commercial radio we’d be fired by now.”

He then put on a mock voice suggesting he was imitating a would be radio executive: “‘That link was 30 seconds. You did three minutes. If you’d like to collect your P45 on the way out that would be fine, that would be great.’ Oh move on.

“Yes I know I’ve been wanging on, I apologise. I promise I’ll play loads of great tracks back to back.”

Vernon opened the segment by sharing just how much “joy” he had felt being part of the iconic Oasis Homecoming Concert in Manchester. Ahead of the performance, Vernon ventured backstage with several special guests, meeting individuals who had witnessed the Oasis phenomenon unfold before their very eyes.

Reflecting on the events of last summer, Vernon said: “Grown men were weeping. It’s embarrassing. We actually went into the Manchester city centre after we did the show, myself, my brother, my mate Brendan, and we said, shall we nip into boots and get some factor 30?

“In the 90s, it was like, are we ready to go, who’s got the beers? We had a brilliant, brilliant summer, and so did the majority of the nation, just soaking up that wave of joy. It was joy, it really was. Everyone remembering the 90s.”

A Disney-produced documentary chronicling the Oasis reunion tour is scheduled for cinema release in September.

Vernon added: “And the documentary which is released on Disney, the Oasis tour, is something really special. Apparently, I heard that Noel and Liam are not going to see it until it’s actually finished. Some people have seen rough edits. No, no, no, you’re going to see for the first time what people are going to see.”
