OPINION: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced two new media projects in recent days, but one is in bad taste.

Meghan Markle might have just dealt the ultimate insult to Queen Camilla from her Montecito mansion. The Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry have announced various new projects in recent days, with their production company Archewell Productions getting involved in both a Netflix rom-com and a new documentary to premiere at the Sundance Festival.
I’ve written in the past about how I think both are bad moves for the non-working royals. But having taken a deeper dive into both projects, I’ve noticed both run the risk of taking very public swipes at the Royal Family back in the UK.
First, let’s take a look into the documentary, set for release next year. The film will follow a series of Girl Scouts – a league Meghan used to be a part of – as they compete to sell cookies around the US. The business is worth a whopping $800million, and gets understandably tense as the youngsters compete to make the most cash.

It’s in the title the problem lies – the film is called Cookie Queens. Meghan and Harry got involved after most of the project was already finished, which likely means the title was already set before they stepped in.
Am I reading too far into things? Maybe. But it’s one thing to distance yourself from the monarchy and then snub it completely – it’s another to keep using your Sussex moniker and allying yourself with the word “queen” used casually.
‘Cookie queen’ as a phrase dates back at least to 1985, when Elizabeth Brinton sold a record 18,000 boxes of cookies and 100,000 in her entire Girl Scout career. Since then, that record has been broken by Lilly Bumpus, who sold 32,484 boxes in 2021 and took the reigning ‘queen’ title.
But Meghan has managed to make this project, well… about her. It’s gone past focusing on the Girl Scouts and more about Harry and Megs. She said in a statement: “As a former Girl Scout myself, with my mom as my troop leader, I have a personal affinity for this film and am proud that all our conversations and collaboration have led to Archewell Productions partnering with this award-winning team to executive produce this incredibly captivating documentary.”
Meghan posted a throwback snap of her in her Girl Scout uniform back in April 2025, captioning it: “Being an entrepreneur can start young (by the way, all these years later and I’m still selling cookies!)”
Maybe Meghan saw herself as a Cookie Queen? It all seems a little bit too coincidental to be, well, entirely coincidental. It feels like a potential dig at both Queen Camilla and Princess Kate, who will be Queen when William takes the throne as king.
The documentary isn’t the only risk she’s running. Archewell has teamed up to produce rom-com The Wedding Date, adapted from Jasmine Guillory’s bestselling novel. The problem with that is that it’s the first book in a series – and the fourth, if it gets to a Netflix adaptation, is called Royal Holiday.
The plot follows an American woman travelling to England to work for the royals. American Vivian falls for Malcolm, a man who has worked for the Queen for years.
Strangely reminiscent of Harry and Meghan’s real-life love story, isn’t it?
I’m just saying, if I was the Duchess of Sussex, I’d steer well clear of anything that could look like a potential snub to the Royal Family. I, for one, am waiting with bated breath to see what project Archewell announces next.
