The fallout from Jimmy Kimmel’s shock suspension is now spilling over onto one of ABC’s most trusted faces, David Muir, as furious viewers begin saying their goodbyes and vowing to tt the network altogether.

On September 17, ABC stunned Hollywood and Washington alike when it abruptly yanked Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air “indefinitely.” The decision came just hours after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr blasted Kimmel’s on-air comments about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, calling them “truly sick,” and even suggesting ABC’s broadcast license could be in jeopardy. Nexstar Media Group, which controls dozens of ABC affiliates, wasted no time announcing it would refuse to air the late-night host’s program because of what it called “offensive and insensitive” remarks.
But while Kimmel has gone silent, it’s David Muir who is now catching heat in unexpected ways. Fans of World News Tonight — the most-watched evening news broadcast in America — lit up social media during and after Muir’s September 18 show. Some said they were done with ABC entirely, turning their anger on the anchor himself.
“So long, David Muir. ABC screwed you, too,” one viewer fumed on X, formerly Twitter. Another declared, “Goodbye David Muir, I’m not watching ABC again and goodbye Disney anything.” A third vowed, “So long GMA, The View, General Hospital, David Muir, Disney, Hulu and anything else tied to Nexstar. I can and will survive without you.”
Others went even further, insisting Muir should walk away from ABC before his own reputation gets dragged down. “I am done with ABC. I wish someone like David Muir would walk on them,” one user posted, while another wrote bluntly, “If David Muir doesn’t bail ship, he’s a fool. I’ll be sad if those are his true colors.”

And then came the warnings. “ABC WORLD NEWS TONITE YOU AND DAVID MUIR IS NEXT,” one furious viewer shot back, convinced the anchor will be targeted next in the storm engulfing the network.
Complicating matters further, some critics blasted Muir’s editorial decisions. While NBC and CBS led their nightly broadcasts with the Kimmel scandal, ABC slotted it as the second story, after a CDC vaccine panel vote. That alone set off accusations that Muir was downplaying the drama to protect the network. “Does @ABCWorldNews hack David Muir ever tell the truth?” one person asked. Another scoffed, “ABC News was unable to report the Kimmel debacle without bias. I could see David Muir barely able to contain himself when reporting it.”
One particularly bitter viewer complained that ABC had “called Kimmel’s departure an infringement on free speech,” but failed to note that businesses can fire an employee for damaging their brand. “Never a mention of what freedom of speech really means,” they wrote.

The controversy stems from Kimmel’s Monday night monologue, when he referred to Tyler Robinson, the 20-year-old accused of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk at a Turning Point USA event, as being “one of” Trump’s MAGA movement. “The MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said. The FCC’s Carr called the comments “beyond the pale,” igniting the chain reaction that has left Kimmel off the air and ABC facing questions about its credibility.
Now, caught in the crossfire is David Muir, a journalist who has built his reputation on calm authority. Whether he wanted it or not, viewers are dragging him into the same storm that sank Kimmel, and the pressure on ABC is intensifying by the hour. Some fans are openly begging Muir to leave before the network collapses under the weight of political fury. Others are predicting he won’t escape the wrath at all.
For now, Muir is staying silent. But in the eyes of the audience, the clock is ticking. And in the age of social media, silence may only make the noise louder.
