Michael Anthony Strahan Jr., the only son of television host and former NFL star Michael Strahan, has lived much of his life outside the spotlight. Born on September 12, 1994, to Strahan and his first wife, Wanda Hutchins, Michael Jr. spent his early childhood in Germany with his mother and older sister Tanita. He remained there until he was 11 years old, when he moved back to Houston to be closer to his father. His years in Germany left a lasting impression on him—so much so that he had the country’s eagle tattooed on his arm. In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, he admitted he was “fluent but rusty” in German.

Michael Sr. has often spoken about the effort it took to stay close to his children while they were living overseas. “I think a lot of times when you split, people assume that the mother is supposed to take responsibility for the kids,” he told PEOPLE. “But from day one, it was very important for me to be active, to be a part of their life. I was constantly on planes and phones. And it’s very hard—of course it’s hard with them being in Germany. But one thing I learned is, you make time for what you want to make time for.”

After graduating high school, Michael Jr. enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio before later relocating to New York. His father once described him to New York Family as smart, funny, and meticulous, recalling that his son had recently gotten a car and insisted on washing and caring for it daily. “He’s a very particular young man,” Strahan said at the time. “He’s very smart too. He likes to say to me, ‘Dad, you’re smart, but you cannot challenge me in the fields of math and science.’”

Despite being the son of one of America’s most recognizable TV personalities, Michael Jr. has kept his life private. His Instagram account contains only a few photos, and he rarely makes public appearances. One of his only television moments came in August 2018, when he joined his father on Good Morning America—an experience he jokingly dubbed his “15 minutes of fame.”

Today, Michael Jr. remains the most private of Strahan’s four children. While his sisters Tanita, Isabella, and Sophia have been more visible in creative and public pursuits, he continues to carve out his own path quietly, away from the spotlight that has long surrounded his famous father.
