The stadium was packed, the air electric with anticipation, but something felt different. As fans poured in for Sunday’s NFL games, a hush swept through the crowd—a silence so heavy it seemed to press against every seat. On the field, players stood shoulder to shoulder. The Jets, Cardinals, Dolphins, Saints, Steelers, Titans, Chiefs, and Cowboys all paused before kickoff, heads bowed in tribute to Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative activist whose sh0cking assass!nat!on just days earlier had rattled the nation.

The NFL held a moment of silence before the Packers’ game against the Commanders on Thursday at Lambeau Field, and in a statement the following day, the league revealed that the individual teams would make decisions on whether to hold moments of rememberence for Kirk moving forward.
“Last night’s moment was the league’s decision,” the league said in a statement. “It’s up to the clubs for this Sunday’s games. There have been a variety of moments of silence and tributes in-stadium and on-air in all games or a game immediately following events that rise to a national level. Clubs also often hold moments following a tragic event that affects their community.
“There have been moments following school sh00tings or an attack on a house of worship such as the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. There also have been moments following major international incidents such as Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and weather-related incidents such as major hurricanes and fires.”
The Yankees also held a moment of silence for Kirk before their game Thursday.
At the Jets game, photos of Kirk, his wife and their children were shown on the videoboard.
But as the cameras panned across the league, a ripple of controversy erupted. The Bengals, Lions, Colts, Vikings, and Ravens—five teams—stood apart, refusing to hold a moment of silence. In Baltimore, a fan in a purple jersey shook his head, muttering, “Unbelievable. Not even a minute for the guy?” On Twitter, the outrage was instant. “The Ravens just lost my respect,” one user posted, racking up thousands of likes. Another wrote, “How hard is it to show a little humanity?”

At the Yankees game, the tribute was simple but powerful—a moment of reflection before the first pitch. “This is what America’s about,” one longtime fan said, voice trembling. “Coming together when it matters.”
But not everyone agreed. In Detroit, a Lions supporter shrugged, “Politics don’t belong in football.” On Reddit, the debate raged: “Why single out Kirk? There are tragedies every week.” Yet for Kirk’s supporters, the silence from those five teams felt like a slap in the face.
As news broke that Tyler Robinson, 22, had been identified as Kirk’s alleged assassin, the shock deepened. The story dominated every feed, every conversation. “This country’s lost its soul,” someone tweeted, tagging all five teams. “We can’t even mourn together.”
With two more NFL games left this week—Buccaneers vs. Texans, Chargers vs. Raiders—the question hung in the air: would these teams join the tribute, or add fuel to the fire?
In living rooms, bars, and stadiums, Americans argued, grieved, and remembered. The moments of silence—held or withheld—became more than a gesture. They were a battleground for empathy, for unity, for the soul of the game itself. And as the lights dimmed and the crowds roared once more, one thing was certain: football, like the country it represents, was changed forever.
