GMB paused for breaking news announcement

Good Morning Britainwas paused for a breaking news announcement this morning. Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray welcomed Michelle Morrison on the show as she reported live from St Thomas’ Hospital. Michelle shared on the show that doctors have been in a dispute over their pay for two years.

It was announced on the show that Health Secretary Wes Streeting has referred to the British Medical Association (BMA) as a cartel who are “holding the public to ransom”. Morrison added that doctors responded by stating with inflation, their pay is 20% less than what it was in 2008.

Clips of doctors discussing their strikes were shared during the announcement as it was reported that doctors “don’t want to strike”, but will join the picket line because they’re missing out on lunch breaks, leaving late, and don’t have enough doctors.

It was reported that they’re after a 26% pay increase, but the government has deemed it “unreasonable” after giving out a 28.9% rise over the last two years.

Wes Streeting has since stated the BMA is no longer a “professional voice for doctors”, claiming they are issuing “cartel-like behaviour and threaten the recovery of the NHS, and the future of the NHS.”

It has been reported that the walk-out will last until Wednesday morning. One member of the public also joined the show to explain that her surgery that she’d been waiting a long time for had been cancelled, leaving her in prolonged pain.

People rushed to the comments to share their thoughts, though they were left divided. One user wrote: “Listening to the discussion has made me so angry, the lack of appointments is not lack of doctors it’s because they all work privately more than the NHS.”

Another wrote: “They want a 26% pay rise!!! Unbelievable! I’m a teaching assistant and I got a 1.5% pay rise! The doctors earn more than enough! Those of us on the lowest wages need [payrises] bringing up to a decent amount, not doctors who earn loads already!” While others fumed it was “disgusting and greedy”.
