Sara Cox has announced her return to BBC Radio 2, just hours after her impressive fundraising efforts.

The 50-year-old radio presenter was overcome with emotion as she completed a 135-mile Great Northern Marathon challenge for Children In Need on Friday (November 14).

Over the past five days, Sara has covered the equivalent of five marathons, starting at Kielder Forest and continuing through Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire.

Her journey concluded in Pudsey, Leeds, after battling through Storm Claudia, which hit on her final day of the challenge.

On Monday’s (November 17) episode of BBC Breakfast, hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were quick to share the joyous news that Sara had raised over £10m through her challenge.

In a touching moment, Sara expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped raise the funds, saying, “It’s absolutely astonishing.

“Our £10m is the fivers and tenners from Radio 2 listeners and Children in Need supporters, who have each individually given their hard-earned cash.

“It means the absolute world. I can’t believe it, it’s going to make a huge difference to so many kids, so thank you for every penny.”

Reflecting on the emotional final moments, the star confessed: “Hearing my mum’s voice and then I saw my big brother Rod on Friday and my best mates.”

She went on to say, “Friday was just pure adrenaline. I was in so much pain, but I knew that two of my three kids were at the finishing line with my husband, so I just thought, let’s just crack on.”

Her co-host Jon then insisted she take a break, saying, “Go back to bed, Sara.” In response, the radio host said: “I am.” She lifted her leg to show her casual attire, adding: “I’ve got my joggers on and socks on.”

Sally chimed in with: “duvet day, duvet week.” Despite taking some time off to recuperate, it seems Sara is eager to get back to work.

Sara confirmed: “I’m back on air Wednesday, just because I want to get back to my listeners. I normally stand up when broadcasting, but I’ll be sitting down on Wednesday at least.”
